DAY 1 AUSTRALIA - CAPE TOWN
Depart Australia this evening flying with Emirates via Dubai to Cape Town.
DAY 2 CAPE TOWN
We boast of the beauty of Sydney Harbour, shamelessly shining its image of beauty to every corner of the globe, but Cape Town is a city that stands as its worthy rival. Arrive into Cape Town and transfer to the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel which has long been regarded as one of the city’s top five star hotels. We enjoy dinner at our hotel this evening.
DAY 3 CAPE TOWN
This morning we drive down the rugged Cape Peninsula. Who would have guessed the wildlife encounters would begin so early in our journey? The tucked away Boulders Beach is home to a large colony of African Penguins. Bid farewell to our curious tuxedoed friends and travel further down the coast to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, known to sailors simply as “the Cape”. Take the funicular or stretch your legs up to the lighthouse and along the path of the rocky promontory. By now you’ll have worked up an appetite, just in time for a gourmet lunch in a beautiful restaurant overlooking the fishing boats and oceans of Kalk Bay. Back in Cape Town this evening choose from a selection of excellent restaurants in the Waterfront Area – in true Constellation A La Carte style.
DAY 4 CAPE TOWN
Today we make the most of the area’s fantastic wineries. But first you have to work for it – with a leisurely bike ride through the vineyards! Kick the stand down on your bike and enter into Boschendal Estate – one of South Africa’s oldest farms. Whet your whistle with a wine tasting before lunch at the estate. This afternoon we reach for the clouds as the cable car lifts you upward for extraordinary views across the city from Cape Town's iconic Table Mountain. We return to the luxury of our hotel with time to unwind before a dinner at an exclusive location and enviable views across the Atlantic Ocean.
DAY 5 BLUE TRAIN
It’s not long ago that South Africa was divided by apartheid. And you know the incredible story of Nelson Mandela and his lifelong dedication to freedom for his people. Inextricably tied to Mandela's story is Robben Island, where he and hundreds of others were imprisoned for almost three decades. This morning we take a ferry to Robben Island and begin to understand the stark reality lived by those once incarcerated there. Later we make our way to the train station for what is sure to be one of this journey highlights – the train trip from Cape Town to Pretoria aboard the opulent blue Train. We start as we mean to go on, with a special pre-departure reception at the station. With a celebratory glass of bubbles in your hand it won’t be long before your butler calls your name and accompanies you to your suite aboard the train. Settle in to your luxurious compartment before the bell rings for High Tea in the Lounge Car. The decadence continues with dinner in the Dining Car – this is fine dining at its best. Sweeping vistas, leather chairs and wood panelling. But the best bit, the food and wine beyond reproach.
DAY 6 BLUE TRAIN
Pull back your blind but perhaps linger a while in the pure percale cotton sheets. There’s something truly special about watching the world go by your window from the comfort of your bed. Enjoy a restful morning aboard the train – interrupted only by the call to the Dining Car for a memorable breakfast and lunch. After lunch we stop at the Kimberley Open Mine Museum. Discover the mine – and if you don't want to be tempted by the magnificent jewels for sale it might be wise to avoid the ‘gift shop’! Back onboard the train retire to your suite for a siesta or join newly made friends in the lounge Car before another incredible dinner, accompanied of course by fine South African wines, as we clickety clack down the track to Pretoria.
DAY 7 CHOBE NATIONAL PARK
Pulling in to Pretoria Station we say goodbye to our first mode of privately chartered transport and make our way to the airport for the next part of our VIP treatment - our own aeroplane to make short Africa’s vast distances. Upon arrival in Kasane a fleet of 4WDs take us to Chobe Game Lodge - the only lodge located within the National Park itself.
DAY 8 CHOBE NATIONAL PARK
Rise with the birds this morning - there’s over 440 species in Chobe! With tea to warm our bellies we’re off into the dawn for an African wildlife safari. It won’t be long before you see your first animal, the birds aren’t the only ones here who like an early morning! Giraffes are foraging for the day’s first meal while the gentle antelope grazes nearby. Return to the lodge for lunch. This afternoon we take to the water and enjoy a relaxing safari cruise. Look out for the bountiful herds of hippo wallowing in the mud and the elephants coming to drink. Let peace descend with sundowners over the river before dinner on the deck of our lodge.
DAY 9 VICTORIA FALLS
As the sun warms the ground, it’s not hard to imagine the life of the nomadic San bushmen who once roamed here. On our morning game drive keep an eye out for lions - and even cheetahs or leopards, they’re all a possibility at Chobe. Later this morning we make like a Rockstar and reboard our private plane, flying towards Victoria Falls. Upon landing we waste no time - disembarking from our plane with the option of hopping into a helicopter for a scenic flight over Victoria Falls (additional cost). There will be time to explore the gorgeous grounds of the Victoria Falls Hotel this afternoon and perhaps take a dip in the pool. Later this afternoon we step aboard the African Queen for a sunset cruise on the Zambezi. As the sun goes down the birds and animals tend to their evening business while the never ending smoke-like spray from the falls dances in the air.
DAY 10 VICTORIA FALLS
Location and timing are everything. And you are in the right place at the right time! Our hotel is only a short walk to the falls and we’re here in the wet season, when the water’s power is all consuming. We’ll make sure you experience the falls from both sides – Zimbabwe and Zambia, each side offering a unique perspective.
This afternoon is yours to choose:
- Discover the gentle giant of Africa with an up close elephant experience.
- Meet the people of Victoria Falls on a village interaction where you’re invited to stay for lunch.
- Victoria Falls Bridge not only crosses the Zambezi River, it connects Zambia with Zimbabwe. Learn of its fascinating history with a bridge tour.
Let the music of Africa envelop you tonight during a rhythmic African drumming performance. You might even like to give it a try?
DAY 11 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Feeling invigorated we leave Victoria Falls, flying to our next African adventure in the Serengeti. Whilst we make a brief stop in Kilimanjaro for immigration purposes before reaching the Serengeti. The convenience and comfort of our private aircraft really comes into play today, Victoria Falls to the Serengeti in one day would be almost impossible otherwise. Settle into the brand new Melia Serengeti game lodge and prepare for tomorrow’s wildlife encounters.
DAY 12 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Few natural spectacles on earth can surpass the intensity and drama of The Great Migration of the Serengeti. We’ve booked front row seats for nature’s grandest theatre. Jumping into our 4WD safari jeeps in search of the Big Five, something that any traveller simply must accomplish. Prime your binoculars to be front and centre for the thrill of the chase and maybe even chance encounters with newborn cubs practising their hunting skills in the long grass, or a cheetah on the prowl ready to hunt.
DAY 13 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
This morning the choice is yours:
- Launching at dawn, rising as the sun rises, you gently float over the plains of the magnificent Serengeti by hot air balloon (additional cost).
- Search by 4WD to see what else the Serengeti has to offer today. The Serengeti’s terrain varies from volcanic grasslands and vast plains interposed by rivers, rocky outcrops, forests and volcanoes. Cast your eyes skywards to a flurry of feathers with over 500 species of birds native to these plains. Anything could happen in these lands where the lion is king.
DAY 14 ZANZIBAR
Today we leave wild plains of Africa - but there’s time for one more game drive. Have your camera ready to frame that perfect photo. A lion stalking its prey? A leopard lounging on a low hanging branch perhaps? We rejoin our private plane and fly to Zanzibar. Could there be a more exotic, evocative place name than Zanzibar? Upon landing you will be whisked to the Park Hyatt Zanzibar – on the beach, in the heart of Stone Town, there’s no better location on the island.
This evening it’s up to you:
- Dine at one of our hotel’s restaurants or venture out and taste the local cuisine.
DAY 15 ZANZIBAR
Stone Town is where it’s at. Join us on a walking tour, twisting your way through the cobblestone streets and labyrinth of alleys including the site of the former slave market and the House of Wonders. Take your time to soak up the atmosphere of this remarkable town. Lunch is served at our oasis of a hotel.
This afternoon it's up to you:
- You may simply like to relax by the beachfront pool; or join us on a drive into the countryside, visiting an ancient Spice Farm.
As day turns to night find yourself aboard a dhow, an East African sailing vessel. We glide onto a private beach for a special beach barbeque dinner.
DAY 16 ADDIS ABABA & LALIBELA
Aboard our private plane we make short work of the distance between Tanzania and Ethiopia with a lunchtime flight, enjoying food and wine served at 8000 metres above sea level. We land in the bustling hive of Addis Ababa and drive to our sanctuary of Ethiopian grandeur, the Sheraton Addis. What do you feel like for dinner – Italian, Indian or Middle Eastern? It’s all on offer at our hotel.
DAY 17 ADDIS ABABA & LALIBELA
The spectacularly opulent cathedrals of Europe suddenly pale in comparison. The rock hewn Christian churches of Lalibela are astounding. We fly from Addis Ababa to Lalibela this morning to witness some of the eleven monolithic cave churches, dating back to the 13th century. Even today Lalibela remains a site of pilgrimage and devotion. Later this evening we come together for a farewell dinner at our hotel. Bid adieu to new friends and reminisce of your incredible journey through Africa.
DAY 18 ADDIS ABABA & LALIBELA - AUSTRALIA
Explore “Addis”, as it’s locally known, as our expert guides show us the highlights. Drive to the summit of Mt Entoto for a panorama across the city and get up close and personal with ‘Lucy’, the oldest skeleton known to the world at the Anthropological Museum. Despite what many think, Ethiopian food can be delicious - as we find at lunch today. Depart Addis Ababa this afternoon as we join scheduled flights back to Australia today.
